Article 1: Rjyan's online diary, April 8, 2001

Last night I played this show here in Baltimore. It was tight. DJ Shields spun instrumentals while I freestyled, I had a ball, I'm not sure what the crowd thought, though. It was this benefit show for Amnesty torture relief fund and all the other bands were cave-style, but I think maybe a couple people came trying to see Cex. I went on last and the room had quite a few people in it by the time I went on, and when I started I don't know if people had any idea what they were supposed to do. I saw quite a few solemn faces and cynical heads -- and I freestyled about them, of course -- but I'm pretty sure they got won over by the end. The end came after like 55 minutes, it was nuts. I'm usually a big subscriber to the "leave them wanting more, don't let them even have time to look at the watch" theory of 30-35 minute performance, but this was a different type of set and since it was really the first time I've ever freestyled on a stage in front of a crowd I figured I might as well exploit the opportunity to REALLY exercise my domepiece and go marathon-style. I think I might have to play more sets like this. I mean, my shows have been a lot about going off the top of the head for a while, but it was all ranting, no rhyming. Obviously, rhymes are the next level, and you know the next level is how I'm trying to live.
